Deron Williams on Twitter
I have been following Deron Williams on Twitter for some time now (I think I was follower number 20 or so) and had my suspicions of whether it was another claim jumper registering the name or the real deal. Although Deron never replies to any direct messages or follows anyone else on Twitter I decided to go along for the ride and conclude it was the real Deron Williams of the Utah Jazz.
Even though the messages Deron Williams provided were short and to the point it actually changed how I experienced an NBA playoff series. For the first time I was not contained to the hype machine of sports media that mindlessly replays sound bites for ratings 24 hours a day. Ahem… ESPN Sports Center… Ahem… Since I decided to go along and believe that this in fact was the real Deron Williams it was great to check in or get updates from Deron in what had to be a circus frenzy of an NBA playoff series against the Lakers.

So why don’t more NBA players have Twitter accounts? Yea I know they have better things to do but most have two to three “handlers” that fly around the country with them. Can’t one of them master the art of SMS and Twitter once in a while with a quick sentence for the NBA star? Most have websites that get updated by other people anyway or never updated at all in some cases. Not to overhype Twitter but it provides a quick and simple method to reach out to fans.
As a long time NBA fan I hope that this type of communication takes off as it gives a whole new dimension to experiencing the road to the NBA championship from a players perspective. We all know what has to be said and what can’t be said by an NBA player on television or radio. But the internet and Twitter are at the moment open and full of fans waiting to read the latest thoughts and rants uncensored.
